"There are lots of people who like to talk about how important small business is to America, but there are very few who are willing to actually put their money where their mouths are and try to make a difference.
We think it’s time for that to change.
Small business is not just a talking point for us; it’s our passion, our entire reason for existing. The more we talk to entrepreneurs across the country, the more convinced we are that the answer to our biggest financial problems can only be found in the smallest of places.
The goal of The Marketplace by Markdown.com is to assemble the world’s finest collection of unique small businesses. We don’t just look for quality products; we look for quality people—entrepreneurs who are living their own version of the American Dream. And while our acceptance rate might be lower than Harvard’s, we believe that the businesses and products that do make the cut will exceed your expectations in every way.
When you read each of our shop’s stories (just click on a shop name and then the “Our Story” link) you’ll quickly see that these owners are not consumed by profits, they’re consumed by passion, integrity, hard work, and their families—entire generations of them in some cases. You’ll also soon see that supporting these businesses means that you are often supporting entire communities that depend on them. For example, buying a steak from Nebraska Star Beef means that they in turn pay small ranchers, feeders, butchers, storage companies and distributors.
It is real-world trickle-down economics—but it all starts with you.
