Even in TB 52.x, this extension is needed to enable default plaintext delivery formatting (so you can compose as HTML and convert to plaintext for delivery).
"prefer sending plain-text e-mails" will only deliver as plaintext if no HTML is detected during the email's composition.

Great add-on! But since Thunderbird 45.1.1 it is obsolete.
Just make sure "prefer sending plain-text e-mails" is enabled in your "compose message" settings.

Hi, this is the tool I was looking for, but the Format tool does not appear under the Options menu.
I have Thunderbird 38.6.0 under Windows 8.1 64 bit. I also have the following add-ons:
check and send
gcontactsync
google calendar tab
signature switch
Thanks!

It would be awesome if you could update it for the last versionof Thunderbird because it is a great add-on. Thanks a lot to the developer

It is annoying that this extension is even needed - it should not require an extension to simply change a default setting. However, there is no provision in Thunderbird for setting the default Outgoing Message Format to anything other than "Auto-Detect.
This extension provides that functionality, and does it perfectly. My heartfelt thanks to the developer(s).

Perfect. I just wanted to send ALL time e-mail on HTML to save on G-Drive, but Thunderbird was sending that on plain text.

Exactly what I wanted. I want to send all replies in HTML format and I was tired of having to select that option on every reply. To set the default delivery format go to Tools->Add Ons->Extensions and select options on the Delivery Format add on.

TB 24.5.0. Does not change TB's behavior, nor does Format> appear under the Options menu. Maybe there's an incompatibility with one of my other extensions?

I normally want to send plain text. But when I answer HTML mails that looks ugly. So I use this add-on with the "Auto-Detect" option. Perfect!
If one want to send plain text with "format=flowed", one have to set the following Thunderbird setting to true:
mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed

When replaying (or transferring) a plain-text message the TB editor is stuck to non-HTML (or I have not yet discovered where and how switch it to MTML...); and I would like very much be able to edit my reply message with HTML features!
I was expecting that this addon would have solved this problem, but no luck. May I expect this for a future version ?

Oh thanks !
It's unbelievable that thunderbird doesn't have this feature build-in.
My problem was that I must send email in HTML format because the mail server from my company reformat email if it's not in HTMLformat... and add weird spacing in the original email.
Since I can force HTML format for every email with this add on, I don't have this problem anymore.

It works great for Thunderbird 17, I was going crazy trying to fix this bug, thank you so much, it is very useful!

Yes!!!
I've been cursing for years as Thunderbird decides to wrap any email without formatting to 72 characters, even if I tell it to flow the plain text in prefs. I try to put some html formatting in after my signature, but sometimes that doesn't work. Now my emails go out with both flowed plain text without any effort on my part.
What a relief.

This addon solves a use case problem which some users have.
If one choose the "always HTML" add-on option, it will force Thunderbird to always send emails in that format.
Without the addon, when "always HTML" option is enabled in TB, and one sends an unformatted email, TB will send it in plaintext format.
