If you receive emails from Microsoft Outlook or Exchange users, you might often see a mysterious attachment named winmail.dat instead of the actual documents or images they intended to send. This is a proprietary format (TNEF) that Thunderbird does not display by default.
OpenDat solves this problem instantly. It inspects the winmail.dat file, extracts the real files hidden inside, and lets you save them to your computer.
Key Features:
Seamless Decoding: automatically identifies TNEF (winmail.dat) content.
Easy Extraction:
View a list of files contained within the attachment and save them with a single click.
Privacy First:
All decoding happens locally on your computer using JavaScript. Your emails and attachments are never uploaded to any server or cloud service.
Lightweight:
Designed to be fast and unobtrusive.
How to use:
Open an email containing a winmail.dat attachment.
Click the OpenDat icon (or the attachment action).
Select the files you wish to save/extract.
Technical Info:
This add-on uses a local TNEF parser and JSZip to handle extraction without external dependencies, ensuring your data remains private.
Privacy Policy:
OpenDat respects your privacy. The parsing logic (based on tnef-parser.js) runs entirely within your Thunderbird client. No data is transmitted to the developer or third parties.
