unfortunately the site does not provide a download of the 0.8 beta version

you can get a beta version of lightning 1.0 working with tb3 here: http://www.thunderbird-mail.de/wiki/Lightning
it's a german site, but all you need is the download of the yellow box in the upper right corner.
To create your own collections, you must have a Mozilla Add-ons account.
