Translucent red poppy flowers stand foreground vigilance protecting a birch tree forest from an encroaching danger. Ironically the ruby flowers did not survive the assault of winter but the forest of birch did survive. Thankfully, there were both poppies and mommies in this family of Papaveraceae so new poppies rose from the earth when winter passed. Red poppies are also a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime... sigh.
