Found this to be absolutely necessary when using msg threads. But it stopped working in the latest Tbird version. People say it's now built-in, but I can't figure out how to enable it. The default behavior is just plain wrong and infuriating.

Been using RealPrevNextButtons for 6 months and very happy with it. Last update on TB 13.0.1 made arrows disapper (button text still there). Tried remove/reinstall - did not work. Is there a fix? Thanks

THANKS FireballMonkey for *your* frustration and sparing the rest of us! Great news that it will soon (finally) be built-in, as it should have been all along!https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/rpnb-new/?src=cb-dl-usersWhy on earth does mozilla.org leave references to the obsolete (that we have to fix ourselves) when someone has generously shared *their* fixes? ~just sayin'~
If you're up to it, I concur with kiki78 and Paddy Landau's second suggestion--it would be helpful if we could SEE where we are...

GREAT, and ESSENTIAL add-on for going through mountains of emails. Only thing is, it hasn't worked on the last several versions of Thunderbird. Why isn't this a PERMANENT part of Thunderbird?

This functionality is built into Thunderbird starting at version 13. (aceman told me)

I've been using this add-on for quite some time, but I was sick of it not working in newer versions of Thunderbird. So I went in and did some modifications, and made my own version of it. You can get it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/realprevnextbuttons-for-new/. I've tested it on Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10 in Thunderbird 9.0 - 10.0.1. The icons may not show up in other versions, but the buttons should still work.

This is an excellent add-on that really needs to be incorporated into Thunderbird itself. The functionality of this add-on is already built into TB with the F(orward) and B(ackward) keys on the keyboard, but without the buttons/icons on the Mail toolbar, which this add-on supplies (note that you must customize [right-click] your Mail toolbar to actually add the buttons). F = Real Next [right arrow]; (next item down); B = [left arrow] Real Previous (next item up), regardless of the date-sort selection chosen. The standard Previous and Next buttons supplied with TB jump to the next UNREAD message (ggrrrrrrhhhh!). Most people would want the (real) next or (real) previous message as the default, regardless of the read/unread status.

The add-on does require the Add-On Compatibility Reporter (ACR) add-on to be installed to overcome TB's current reporting of RealPrevNextButtons as incompatible. However, the add-on works with TB 3.0-9.0 at least. Be sure to send a compatibility report to TB for this add-on so that Mozilla knows it is compatible with 9.0 at least. (An alternative solution to the incompatibility problem is to modify Darth_Vukster's July 14, 2011 instructions [below] for the version of TB that you have).

With our Win Vista Home Premium TB installation the buttons were initially blank/invisible (no problems at all with Win XP), as some other reviewers have reported, but that was fixed by installing the Classic Reloaded appearance/theme (1.5.2 at time of writing), and has now worked for every TB from 3.0-9.0.

This add-on is highly recommended! Please, Mozilla, include it with TB as standard - it only requires you to add icons to match the F and B keys that are already part of TB's functionality!

TB 9.0.1, FF 9.0.1 (on both Win XP SP3 and Win Vista HP SP2)

Hello,
This is a very useful extension except for the arrows are pointing in the wrong direction. My inbox is sorted by date top to bottom. However, the right hand arrow, ->, goes to the previous message and the left hand arrow, <-, goes to the next message.

TBird 8.0 on OpenSUSE 12.1

It corrects Thunderbird's pointless behaviour of jumping from an unread message to another ,making all but impossible to scroll through all messages in a folder:this extension thankfully makes it possible again.

Add-on works great. I do not like the icons. For some reason on my system (Debian 6.0, icedove 3.0.x) the next button is a small brush (usually meaning clear) and the previous button is a package looking icon.

For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the acronym, ACR means the add-on “Add-on Compatibility Reporter".

I'm now using Thunderbird v 6.01 and with ACR installed RealPrev is working perfectly. I agree that it's hard to see why Mozilla hasn't built this navigation tool into the program. Once you've used it you'll wonder how you ever managed without it!

You must download ACR 0.8.7 to your desktop and then install it from there to TB5. It will then allow you to force the install of REALPREV. The icons are buggered but who cares.

waiting for a new version, compatible with TB 5.0

howdy y'all,

as others have mentioned, if you use ACR [addon compatibility reporter] to force the install, the buttons do work. they have no icons, tho. [*grin*] i sent an email to the author, but i somehow doubt he's still interested.

hopefully, someone will take it up ...

take care,
lee

I'll never understand why TBird implements true previous/next functionality ('F' and 'B' keys) but provides no client buttons for it, bizarre. I'll be waiting for the 5.0 release unless I get accustomed to the F/B method.
EDIT: I just tried the ACR method and not only is it working for me but I see the button icons too somehow! (WinXP SP3/TB5) Kewl!

It is utterly ridiculous that there is not a default Next and Previous button built into Thunderbird!! I am so glad that you created this add-on and I have been using it for years.

I was extremely disappointed when I upgraded to Thunderbird 5.0 and it wasn't compatible. Luckily though, I decided to give the usual editing of the install.rdf file a try (instruction here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_an_add-on_to_change_its_compatibility ). I changed it to indicate "<em:maxVersion>5.0</em:maxVersion>" instead of "<em:maxVersion>3.2a1pre</em:maxVersion>" and the it WORKED!!!! (for the most part). After dragging my Next and Prev icons into my toolbar, they became blank. But they are THERE...and they WORK! So if anyone else using Thunderbird 5 wants this add-on, it will work, with a little finagling. It should any easy upgrade to make it officially work in 5 though. Thanks again!!

One of the most useful add-ons for Thunderbird. I hate the native button actions. Please update for version 5!

Love this extension. Used it for several years.
Post details to mozillazine forums - thunderbird general or thunderbird support, then post a link here.
(I don't think this system likes real urls, so just say where it it.)
