They keyboard on this Mac is the hardest thing to get used to...so many things don't function correctly. Thank's for making Firefox and Thunderbird work.

Thank you Matthew Ball & Keyfixer! I went through the hassle of creating an account here, just to post my appreciation for doing what Gmail wouldn't do: follow dominant keyboard conventions with the Home & End key. So do you have an add-on that puts back the old TEXT based gmail buttons instead of the ludicrously vague icon buttons they've foisted on us?

Hi RevTieDye: I think you can get the text back in GMail by clicking on the gear icon, selecting 'Settings' and changing Button Labels from Icons to Text and then clicking Save at the bottom.

Cheers,
-Matt

This fixes the home and end keys alright, which is what I wanted, but it also disables option+arrow as the move to next/previous word and changes it to command+arrow. I've gotten used to alt+arrow for this, and I just want the home and end keys. Maybe a preferences dialog is needed.

I would not be able to run Firefox on Mac OSX without this extension. I extensively use the home/end keys when editing text in the browser, and simply could not live without this extension. Thank you so much developers!

UPDATE: .... THANK YOU!!!!!!

The update for v6 appears to work fine from what I can tell...
all the keys I use are back to normal!!!

Btw, you may want to put a "Donate" button somewhere...
I'm sure many people are thankful for KeyFixer.

Thanks again, you rock!!

-------------------------
Yup, me too... stupidly updated to Thunderbird v6 (expecting better support for OSX Lion)... that was dumb, Mozilla won't be addressing Lion until v8... yeah, another TWO FULL VERSION CYCLES!!! (will Lion still be the current OS by then????)Anyway, I'm trying to get by without the KeyFixer mod... but it sucks... who knew the Home/End keys were so critical to writing a fast email???As a customer service rep, this is a brutal issue... I'm constantly being tripped up by my habit to use those two keys... now I'm looking at downgrading Thunderbird back to v5... but what a nightmare.I even opened the .xpi file for KeyFixer, tried to edit it myself... but even with hand-coding web design skills, I have no idea what's going on in that file!!Someone please update... such a simple, but wicked addon for us hybrid computer users!!

I've updated the Thunderbird version compatibility to 8 to match that of Firefox. However, I'm not in a position to test compatibility, so please let me know if there are any issues.

The update to TB6 disabled this add-On — and since, at every message I write I notice how much I miss this Add-On., because I use the home and end keys all the time. (Seriously, @Apple: Who on this planet needs to jump to the end of the page more often than to the end of the line!?)
Pleeease update for Thunderbird 6!

This saves so much time, and works great.

I'm using a PC USB keyboard with my mac, and this sorts out the brainless default behaviour of OS X. Seriously, it's like Apple are insisting on counterproductive behaviour of home, end, page up and page down for no reason. On what planet is a modifier key + an arrow key better than pressing a single key??!

FYI for other apps I used http://heisencoder.net/2008/04/fixing-up-mac-key-bindings-for-windows.html and for terminal https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2371145?start=0&tstart=0 .

This plugin fixes the keys in Firefox. Thanks so much!

I just switched from a memory hog called Safari to Firefox. And it is much better experience, one thing that was bothering me was lack of response for Home/End keys when editing text. Thanks to this brilliant extension these shortcuts work again!

Great add-on! Thanks a million! It works great! Pretty crap by Apple to not bind their keys right. No more cmd+ < or > for me.

This addon is great! It makes all the keys you're used to as a non-Mac user work again in Firefox. Unfortunately, it goes a little bit too far by removing some of the mac default key bindings (like alt-left and alt-right, for word-by-word navigation).

To remedy this, I edited the addon to make it do only one thing: add new keybindings to Firefox that work the same way as they do on Windows. Home, End, PageUp, PageDown, and cmd-y (redo) now work just like they do on Windows. I also added ctrl-left and ctrl-right for word-by-word movement, to compliment alt-left and alt-right.

You can find my edited addon, which I've called KeyFixer Lite, right here: https://sites.google.com/site/coredumperror/files/KeyFixer-Lite-0.5.1-macosx.xpi.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

You'll have to unzip it and drag it into Firefox to install it.

Excellent extension providing sensible and industry standard key behaviour for home and end keys.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this extension! :D

It works as advertised, is a must-have for any Mac Firefox user who expects the home and end keys to work like other operating systems' keys, and if the developer stops updating it, I might just stay on 3.6 forever. ;)

Just testing this extension now as I'm typing and I'm glad to report that it's working just fine!! :)

great work and much appreciated!

For those who just want to modify the home/end keys, the extension at http://drop.io/huudjy4 works great. It would be nice if a "preferences" dialog could be added to KeyFixer to just do the home/end keys (and maybe some more customization) so that I wouldn't have to install extensions from unknown sources.

EXCELLENT extension.

As for "do it the mac way" well, OS X could just do it the way everyone else does without fixing the keybindings, and Firefox could just obey the OS. That's a TERRIBLE reason to give an extension a bad review.

I am transitioning from windows/ubuntu environments to a mac and I don't disagree the value in learning the mac keyboard shortcuts, but being able to simply use the ones that I am used to is quite valuable. Its second nature to me... This reduces my frustrations a great deal. Thank you for this plugin!

lenzb, I agree with you - it's nice to just have a fix for home/end; the rest isn't broken. I didn't want my Cmd key remapped. Perhaps you could submit this as a plug-in?

smayer97, it's easy to learn new keystrokes, but hard to unlearn old ones. I could easily learn to get to the end of a line when I wanted to, but that doesn't fix the problem of suddenly being paged to the end of the file every time I hit the "end" key.

Or you can simply learn how to do things the Mac way (which is NOT hard):

When in a text field:
⌘ (Command) + ◀ (left arrow) = Windows Home
⌘ (Command) + ▶ (right arrow) = Windows End

You can also look up all Mac keyboard shortcuts by opening the Help menu in the Finder and typing Keyboard Shortcuts.

Effectively all this does is remap the Mac modifier keys. You can also do this yourself at follows:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Keyboard & Mouse.
Click Keyboard.
Click the Modifier Keys button.
Choose an action from the pop-up menu next to the modifier key you want to change, then click Done.

I use Keyfixer for my home/end keys only. The default version of Keyfixer does much more than the home and end keys and ends up changing the default OS X behavior of some key combinations (like skipping words with option-left/right). I prefer to have only the home/end keys modified, so I created a customized version of the addon to work with the home/end keys only (based off of the original Starry Hope keyfixer_firefox.app).

You can get this customized version (works only with Firefox 3.0 and above) here:
