Last updated in 2014. I seriously doubt you're going to follow up on this, so kudos if you do, but this addon no longer works on TB 68.

Sync Kolab still works pretty well and is the only tool that I found so far, that can sync all your Lightning and Contacts data to YOUR OWN imap folder.
(Of course there are other plugins that can sync stuff, but they only sync your data to THEIR servers, so they can harvest your data.)
Now, since it seems some people have difficulties getting started here, let me give a quick introduction.
1. Open the Thunderbird AddOn page in Firefox and download Sync Kolab to your computer.
Since the author has not given his go for the new TB version, TB thinks Sync Kolab
does not work with the current TB Version, but it does.
2. Start Thunderbird, go to AddOns, klick on the little cogwheel symbol and select
"Install AddOn from file" (or what ever it says in your language).
Select the downloaded addon and install it.
3. Restart TB.
HINT: Before you start step 4. create a subfolder called "Sync" within the emailaccount (aka IMAP folder) that you want to use for storing your sync data. If you want, also create subfolders therein called "Contacts", "Tasks" and what ever items you want to sync. Following this hint may not be necessary, but I highly recommend this to keep things sorted.
While you are at it, make sure your email provider does not automatically delete old messages within those folders.
4. Go to the AddOns page of TB again, select Sync Kolab and click on "Setup" or "Settings" (depending on your language).
5. In the SK menu, on the left, you can see your emailaccounts. Select the entry "Contacts" under the emailaccount, within which you created that "Sync" folder earlier.
Now click on "New" below to create a new synchronisation job.
Then enter a name for that synchronisation job, like "SyncMyContacts".
On the upper right you can now see your addressbooks and on the lower right you can see the folders of the selected emailaccount.
First select the addressbook you want to synchronise (like "Private Addressbook"), in the upper right.
Then navigate to your "Sync" folder and click on it to select it, in the lower right.
Don't click anywhere else for now, just click OK (the reason being, clicking within the menus to the lower left and right , selects items and hence changes the configuration).
(You can do the configuration for all your sync tasks at once, but doing more clicks than necessary results in potentially unwanted configurations.)
6. Repeat step 5 for every addressbook, calendar or other stuff you want to synchronise.
7. Rightclick on your TB toolbar and select "adjust" (depending on your language). Then draw the "Sync Kolab" button into your toolbar.
8. Klick on the Sync Kolab button, to start your first synchronisation.

Sync Kolab macht nichts, außer vielleicht Speicherplatz belegen.

Caused tons of duplicates from my experience with recent versions of kolab?

The automatic configuration sets up non-working settings. Manual mappings also do not work. Useless folders are created. Nothing synchronises. No meaningful errors in the log. Documemntation is insufficient and not updated. FAQ went missing from developers' site. It needs a clear and simple step by step guide and regular updates to keep up with kolab and Thunderbird. (These instructions did not work: http://synckolab.mozdev.org/notes.html)

Spent hours trying to install this. There are no instructions whatsoever. May be fine if you are a programmer or such, but if not, stay well clear until installation instructions are provided.
Example:
After initial downloading, click on 'Options' and a double sided pane appears. What do you do with it? I've tried every permutation : nothing! I found a page entitled 'Installation', hope at last! But all that does is solves problems after installation.
In effect, without instructions, for someone who simply wants to sync address books between Thunderbird installations on several computers, this add-on is useless
__________________________________________
Thankyou for your help. Unfortunately I still cannot make it work. The instructions are the ones I was referring to. Nothing seems to happen as per the instructions. The configuration page has nothing under 'About SyncKolab' despite having several imap accounts. I've tried it on two P,C.s and a laptop, it's the same on all three. Also I have no extra folders.
Mike Hadley
If you check out the about page you will find al ink pointing to instructions ( http://www.gargan.org/en/Mozilla_Extensions/SyncKolab/Installation/ ). and form there a link to the configuration at http://synckolab.mozdev.org/notes.html
I will add the configuration to the installation page for easier access.

whether this application to synchronize contacts to server owncloud protocol carddav?

Cannot get updating of address book entries to sync properly, seems to cause the IMAP folder index to corrupt, automatic compaction of folder on address book update, very much a waste of time. Too touchy I'm giving up. I have a business to run.
Down grading review as auto sync doesn't really seem to work. Updates in adderss book cause new IMAP entry, delete seems ok when only one computer is invovled but these are not noticed by address books on other machines.
The initial sync put all the contacts in the designated IMAP folder. The auto sync is quick as well.
Currently have SyncKolb on three machines and the initial syncing is ok but you get duplicates
As you sync each separate address book, you will get duplicates and the initial sync does not make any effort to flag duplicates based on any criteria including an email address and no criteria can be defined. The de-duping must be done manually. I suppose these entries could be exported, sorted to squeeze out the duplicates. In any case, the auto sync makes removing duplicates more complicated as additional computers with their own address books with their own unqiue entries are added.
A mechanism to define how to match entries so as to avoid duplicates ought to be provided, maybe I'm missing something.
Notes:
You should create a new IMAP folder to hold the sync'd contacts. Otherwise, the contact entries, which act like emails, will intermix with other emails in the folder, clogging the folder with things you otherwise won't want to view.
I've only done Address book entries and not tasks or calendars.

Hallo,

Hi Everyone,
I think it is a good plugin (but I like very much the ThunderSync [1] interative conflict resolution window that I don't found in SyncKolab at the moment)...
On the contrary, I like very much the use of a modern xml standard for data... that ThunderSync has not (at the moment?)...
When it is planned the release of mailing list sync function you could read here:
http://www.gargan.org/en/Mozilla_Extensions/SyncKolab/About/
?
Have All a nice day,
Carlo

It works great with my Kolab 3 Server but no chance to get Tasks working. Although simple Tasks without any criteria doesn't work.
Log says: cannot read / unknown

The Developer provides no contact info on his Mozilla Add-On page or his personal website. SyncKolab provides no directions, tips or guidelines to address installation nuances and/or configuration considerations. I installed SyncKolab on my PC and Laptop. I didn't work and Niko Berger cannot be contacted.

When trying to synchronize contacts between Thunderbird installations on different machines, Sync Kolab just doubles all my contact entries and then goes into suspension. The sequence is reproduced on every machine (Win XP/7) and I am forced to spend hours cleaning my address books. I have not seen it perform any useful action.

This would be exactly what I need if I could get it to work correctly, but I'm now rather fearful because after finally figuring out how to set it up (perhaps incorrectly, I don't know), it deleted a whole bunch of Lightning calendar entries on 1 of the 2 computers I was trying to sync, as previously described by ikpetrof. Unfortunately, there is not much documentation on setting this up and how it is supposed to work. It actually took me some time to figure out that it was up to me to add the requisite imap folder and how to do that.

Doesn't work on Thunderbird/Lightning 12

WinXP; TB 12.0.1; Synkolab 1.5.4; IMAP:googlemail

Viele Grüße und vielen Dank, nice work !
