A great alternative to the much missed Mailbox Alert add-on which sadly no longer is being developed it seems for v115 of TB.

A quick search today reveled this, NTFNTF, and it's got the makings of being just as good with maybe a few more features added as things develop.

After initial installation and for anyone also confused (on Windows 11 at least) about NTFNTF's notification sounds playing as well as with what I thought was TB's notification sound (even though I'd turned that off as per the instructions), I realised after a while what I was actually hearing was the Windows 11 notification sound. A trip to Windows>Settings>Notifications>Mozzilla Thunderbird and then switching off "Play a sound..." cured the problem.

Some of the inbuilt default sounds are a bit loud/long/harsh and they might be better being a collection of simpler quick pings and tings, but with the individual email account volume controls and the new ability to import customs sounds it's not too much of an issue, I just need to bother to find some gentler sounds on the web somewhere and get around to importing them.

While NTFNTF is great, there is one thing that I'm really missing that was possible with Mailbox Alert and that's the ability to filter or choose which particular emails per email account can be included/excluded for the notification. Per my various email accounts there are some emails received with certain subject lines or senders that I don't want to be notified about, and some that I do, and it would be great to have some sort of ability to set up rules within each account to give a more granular control. As NTFNTF is currently, it's rather all or nothing per email account.

I see this add-on is quite new and it's a great start that works well, hopefully the creator, Dan, will be able to develop things further as time moves on.

Thanks so much for where NTFNTF is already, it works well and is far better than the inbuilt TB method.

I was waiting for a long time for this ferature but NTFNTF does not work at least for local folders (& can't log in in gitlab) gooly @ gmx . at

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.2.0).

You're absolutely right. Unfortunately I dont see a way to support Local Folders given Thunderbirds onMailReceived event doesnt trigger on Local Folders. As such I've removed them in the list of accounts in the latest update to not cause confusion. This is unfortunate but I'll keep an eye out to see if this feature is ever something that can be introduced.

Perfectly does what it advertizes. It doesn't claim to have custom sounds, but there are even a set to choose from (at least on MacOS, I can't speak for other OS). I don't understand the bad reviews about this feature, that the add-on doesn't claim to have. It doesn't provide world peace either, is that a reason to give a bad review?
The documentation for setup is great, even for MacOS, where the notifications are done by the OS. Perfect if you use sieve filters and don't want to get notifications for new mails in folders but only for the inbox. You can choose a different sound for each account e.g. to differentiate between work and private mails.
Highly recommended add-on!

Great addon! I particularly like the fact that it doesn't overcomplicate things by adding settings for custom sounds etc.

Following the UNIX mantra of "Do one thing well". Great work!

I am using version 1.1. Currently the interface is simple, but good. It is very nice being able to set different sound notifications per account.
