I have growlforwindows but I cant type into the password field when I do growl/gntp preferences in the addon... so I can register it for notifications. Too bad, I really wanted to use this

Unless you have set up GfW to require local apps to require a password (Security tab), then you dont need to specify the password. (You are correct though that the password field is unselectable - the password functionality has been disabled and I have not yet removed the input box).
